On behalf of Cardano, Ciklum is looking for a Senior Python Engineer to join our team full-time in Malaga.

Cardano was founded in 2000 to help pension plans achieve their financial objectives in a steady, predictable way by applying robust investment and risk management techniques. The Group now employs over 400 professionals (in Rotterdam, London, and Nottingham) who work for institutional investors with assets of c. £350bn.

As the company continues to grow, Cardano’s business continues to increase in sophistication, growing and making major investments in critical parts of its business. In the role of a Senior Python Developer, you will be a part of the team, responsible for working with the business to enhance Cardano’s systems to support these goals, you will work side by side with the business gaining a deep knowledge and understanding of finance and the wide range of exotic instruments that we trade.

You will join the Rotterdam based Software Engineering team working closely with the larger team in London and Malaga, covering Software, Data, DevOps and Infrastructure engineering, to help development of desktop applications, web applications, microservices, system API’s and ETL jobs to make Cardano’s processes in trading, portfolio construction, portfolio management and operations robust, scalable and efficient. You work together with the business to convert their needs into software that is compatible with the stack, design philosophy and architecture. You develop a good understanding of financial markets to maintain a conversation with the business and think along with their problem statement.

The responsibilities will consist of a range of ongoing, project and ad-hoc tasks. They will involve working with a range of different teams and supporting work in several different areas.

  • Use your Software Engineering skills to provide complete solutions using best practices, ensuring performance and reliability
  • There is typically no middle person between you and the business and together with the business you convert their needs into software that is compatible with our stack, design philosophy and architecture
  • You develop a good understanding of financial markets to maintain a conversation with the business and think along with their problem statement
  • Work closely with the DataOps, DevOps, infrastructure platform team and other data project teams to ensure your projects use the most appropriate technology consistent with the firm’s strategic tools
  • As part of the software engineering support rota, provide production monitoring, and management of applications, API’s, overnight batches, and data feeds into, and out of the firm
  • Staying abreast of changing technologies, and continuous learning of new approaches to data and software engineering and technologies and bring those ideas into the firm
  • Interact with the industry and promotes the firms engineering brand through meetups, conferences, blogging, open source


  • 5 years relevant industry experience
  • Good python skills with 2 years production experience in Python or C# for API services
  • Be able to implement principles for writing reliable, performant Python microservices
  • Experience with databases (any SQL and NoSQL)
  • Ability to query SQL databases and write good queries to provide API performance
  • Able to troubleshoot production issues and implement fixes to prevent reoccurrence
  • Experience with an event driven architecture is desirable but a desire to learn is required
  • Experience with Big Data Technologies such as Hive, Apache Nifi, Apache Airflow is a bonus but not required as the right candidate will have enough data experience to learn these quickly on the job
  • Either experience with, or a willingness to learn, C# services and applications to be able support our existing systems. Even though .net applications and services will remain for the foreseeable future, it is good to realise that new applications and services will be built in Python

  • Like working with the broader engineering team including infrastructure, data engineering and DevOps as well as business developers and users

  • Strong, clear, and concise communication skills – verbal, written & interpersonal. Proven track record in taking pragmatic approach to applying solutions to developer solutions with the flexibility to cope with changing requirements and drive for attention to detail
