Ciklum is looking for a Expert Data Engineer (BigQuery) to join our team full-time in Ukraine.

They're looking for talented and trusted engineers to help them impress their customers. As a Data Engineer you will participate in optimization of production DAGs to reduce GCP BigQuery costs.

Responsibilities

  • Design, write, and optimize complex SQL queries in the BigQuery dialect, ensuring performance efficiency and scalability across large datasets
  • Identify and remediate SQL anti-patterns, including but not limited to inefficient partitioning, suboptimal joins, and excessive resource consumption
  • Develop and maintain scalable data models aligned with business needs, ensuring efficient data storage and query performance
  • Monitor and optimize BigQuery performance, leveraging best practices such as clustering, partitioning, materialized views, and query caching
  • Build and orchestrate large-scale data pipelines using Apache Airflow, ensuring reliability, maintainability, and transparency in data workflows
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to identify opportunities for performance improvement, proactively suggesting query and architecture optimizations
  • Continuously evaluate and enhance GCP-based data solutions, applying a strong understanding of cloud-native tools and services
  • Contribute to data quality and integrity, establishing validations, monitoring, and alerting systems where appropriate
  • Document technical solutions and best practices, enabling knowledge sharing and operational continuity across teams

Requirements

  • Advanced proficiency in SQL, particularly BigQuery dialect, with the ability to identify and resolve anti-patterns (e.g., partitioning issues, inefficient queries)
  • Strong understanding of data modeling, BigQuery performance optimization techniques, and familiarity with large-scale data pipelines
  • Experience with Apache Airflow and GCP environments is preferred. Ability to suggest optimization strategies and spot incidental improvements beyond anti-patterns
  • Experience coding in, Java, Python, Scala, with solid CS fundamentals including data structure and algorithm design
  • Experience in cloud data platforms ( GCP)
  • Knowledge of professional software engineering best practices for the full software
  • Knowledge of Data Warehousing, design, implementation and optimization
  • Knowledge of Data Quality testing, automation and results visualization
  • Knowledge of BI reports and dashboards design and implementation (PowerBI, Tableau)
  • Knowledge of development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, and operations
  • Experience participating in an Agile software development team, e.g. SCRUM
  • Experience designing, documenting, and defending designs for key components in large distributed computing systems
  • A consistent track record of delivering exceptionally high-quality software on large, complex, cross-functional projects
  • Demonstrated ability to learn new technologies quickly and independently
  • Ability to handle multiple competing priorities in a fast-paced environment
  • Undergraduate degree in Computer Science or Engineering from a top CS program required. Masters preferred
  • Experience with supporting data scientists and complex statistical use cases
